Not only did Denise meet Yo Yo Ma this year but she got to spend about 8 hours with Alan Alda last week! Several hours at dinner, at a table for 8 that included one of the co-discover's of the Higgs Boson (UCSB's Joseph Incandela), a 2000 Nobel Laureate in Physics Herbert Kroemer, Chancellor Yang, his wife Dilling, Craig Montell and former Vice Chancellor for Research Mike Witherell. During the workshop on science communication she also got to spend 3 hours playing theatre improv games with the one and only Alan Alda. What fun!

A fringe benefit of inviting seminar speakers is getting to meet their friends. Speaker Tom Kornberg arrived in time for the concert by Yo Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble at the Granada Theatre in downtown Santa Barbara. Tom and Yo Yo were cello classmates at The Julliard School back in the day. So Tom was gracious enough to introduce Denise to an enchanting superstar musician and personally charming individual. What fun!
