ZIKV inhibition by a common antibiotic

December 13, 2016

In our most recent paper we explore the tropism of ZIKV in the developing brain and evaluate Food and Drug Administration-approved compounds that may have anti-ZIKV activity. Our results show that radial glia and astrocytes are more susceptible to infection by ZIKV than neurons, and provide evidence for the critical role of AXL in ZIKV infection . The screen of FDA approved compounds revealed that azithromycin, a commonly prescribed antibiotic safe in pregnancy, reduces ZIKV proliferation in glial cells.
